Folded Thought of the Day: On my way to the subway this morning I saw that someone had written "Fire Your Boss" in chalk on the sidewalk. I found this amusing and interesting. I live in a slightly "hip" area of Brooklyn -- which means it's full of people who think they're too cool to work for the man. Actually, a lot of them come from wealthy families and their stance is a way of justifying their laziness. Now, I'm not very tolerant when it comes to people who complain about their jobs. If you don't dig what you're doing then leave. I wouldn't preach this if I hadn't practiced it in my own life (twice). In Seattle, I held a not-very-challenging position at the University of Washington. I worked with a lot of people who did nothing but complain about their jobs -- which always sounded pretty ridiculous to me. When they complained I basically heard, "dang this company for having the nerve to employ me and give me a wage I agreed to when I should be doing all those things I want to do but don't have the guts to pursue." When it was time for me to complain, I recognized that I was sounding like everybody else. So instead of complaining I decided to quit and actually pursue my dream of becoming a writer. And here I am. The decision wasn't easy, especially compounded with the move to New York City. Talk about a life upheaval. So, when I saw this slogan on the sidewalk I was impressed. It's your life... if your job is truly making you miserable, then fire it -- remove it from your life. Don't complain, don't quit, don't wait to get fired, don't get by, don't stick it out until the stock option or retirement plan kick in. Reverse the roles. Take action. Get funky. Think outside the box. ------------------------
