Folded thought of the day: I received the following quote from Barbara. I'm not sure how anybody could read it, knowing who said it, and not feel like they just had their wind knocked out. "How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment, we can start now, start slowly changing the world!" -- Anne Frank This is such a beautiful and amazing sentiment. But Anne Frank was a beautiful and amazing human being. Facing the most dreadful extremes of discrimination, hatred and violence, she held hope up and taught the world to never forget. This quote should not be read simply as a nice thought. It is a torch... burning... demanding to be recognized, to be remembered every day... and honored with unrelenting vigilance. For the sake of the future, for the sake of humanity and for the sake of the little girl with the big eyes... ...the little girl who wrote: "It's utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals. Perhaps the day will come when I'll be able to realize them!" -- Anne Frank, 15, written July 15, 1944 (3 weeks later, on August 4, 1944, Anne, her family, and the others living with them in hiding were arrested by German police) I recently posted a piece I'd written about Harry Partch. Here's something Harry once said: "I am sure there are dreamers. There are a lot of them probably. If there are enough of them, perhaps we will survive." Yes... we must keep dreaming and striving to honor the spirit of survival and hope... a spirit that will change the world and fulfill the promise.
