The collective sigh has now given way to a certain amount of buyer's remorse. All those billions spent on a bug that may or may not have been a real issue. Was the response to Y2K overkill, hype, or a focused and successful handling of a potentially hazardous situation? Drip... drip... Yes, the absence of a problem raises many questions. Why all the hoopla? What were they really afraid of? Maybe they just didn't want us to get a taste of life with limited technology. Even for a day or two. Didn't want that "Hey, I actually enjoyed not dealing with my cell phone" realization. Maybe... Yes, maybe all that code was written that way for a reason. They've been tackling their own bugs for too many years. Those ATM machines never gave out that much cash in the first place. And the heat ain't working, and neither are those breadline stand-ins for that matter. Could have used some of that focused effort over here. A little dough for the kneading. Drip... drip... Pouring ourselves a cup for the hangover. The groggy-eyed blurring we almost focused on for a brief flash in time now just a distant nagging in the corner of our limited vision. An alarm clock ringing in some forgotten room, nobody around to hear it, raising the question of whether it makes a noise or not.. as the undisturbed slumber continues. Sighing into our pillows... nightmares safely in the distance, 2000 bedbugs scattering under floorboards, dropping out of sight... out of mind. What was that noise...
